Retreat Overview & Itinerary

  • Daily distance range: 20km – 40km per day (depending on your ability)
  • Total distance range: 60km – 100km  [plus 20-40km optional morning/evening runs]
  • Total elevation range: 5,000km – 6,000km
  • Running guides will lead slow, mid and fast-paced groups for runners of different levels.
  • 60-100km of beautiful mountain trail running around San’in area (Izumo, Yonago, Nanbu, Daisen)
  • Running guides for different levels of runners
  • Japanese traditional shared accommodation in Kaike, Daisen and Nanbu
  • All transfers (airport, train journey, in-city and city return)
  • Three meals per day as specified in the itinerary

ITINERARY

(5 & 4-Day Retreat Options)

Day 1 Kaike Onsen Resort Area

  • Flight to Yonago, Tottori
  • Transfer from the airport to the hotel
  • Check-in at the International Kaike Hotel
  • Welcome & Introductions
  • Evening Run (5-10km)
  • Dinner: TBC

Day 2 Daisen Area: Start Sanrakuso

  • Morning easy coastal run (optional)
  • Breakfast at hotel in Kaike
  • Bus transfer to Daisen (30mins)
  • Check-in at Shukubo temple (accommodation) in Daisen
  • Fast Pack Runners’ lunch
  • Run up Daisen – 20-35km with 2,000m D+ (option to add 800m D+ / 6km for faster runners)
  • Slow & Mid Pack Runners’ Lunch
  • Shower & Onsen at Daisen (Hot Spring)
  • Dinner: Local Shojin Ryori (Vegetarian Cuisine) at Shukubo temple

Day 3 Izumo: Start Inasa beach

  • Morning Zazen meditation & easy run (optional)
  • Breakfast at Shukubo temple (accommodation) in Daisen
  • Bus & Train transfer to Izumo
  • Run up Izumo – 20-35km with 1,500m D+ (or more for the faster runners)
  • Mid-run local village snacks & lunch
  • Shower & Onsen
  • Dinner: Classic Japanese Izakaya Food in Izumo

* Transfer to Nanbu for 4-day runners

Day 4 Daisen area: Start Sanrakuso

  • Morning Zazen meditation & easy run (optional)
  • Breakfast at Shukubo temple (accommodation) in Daisen
    Check-out
  • Run up Daisen – 20-30km with 1,500-2,500m D+
  • Mid-run local village snacks & lunch at camping site
  • Shower & Onsen
  • Bus transfer to Nanbu
  • Dinner: Local, traditional Japanese meal with locals in Nanbu

* 4-day retreat runners go to Nanbu on Monday evening allowing for Nanbu Cultural homestay experience & morning town exploration run on Tema trail. Transfer to airport on Tuesday.

Day 5 Nanbu/Yonago/Matsue

  • Morning activity options:
    • Nanbu morning run
    • Japanese rice paddy harvest experience
    • Matsue City & traditional castle exploring
    • Free time for shopping or city exploring
  • Group lunch
  • Airport transfer
